Association of British Dispensing Opticians

About us

"Visiting the ABDO stand at the Hakim SPA is an opportunity to reconnect with the organisation that exists to support, represent and advance the profession of dispensing opticians and contact lens opticians (DOs and CLOs). As the professional body for dispensing opticians in the UK and internationally, ABDO works on behalf of its members to promote high standards, professional development and greater recognition of the vital role DOs and CLOs play in practice. At the stand, members can speak directly with the ABDO team about how the Association supports them at every stage of their career; from training and examinations to continuing professional development, qualifications and professional support. ABDO’s Strategic Plan focuses on creating more opportunities for members, improving services and benefits, enhancing communication, and strengthening the profession, all of which directly impact day to day practice. The stand is also a space to learn more about how ABDO is working to increase awareness and understanding of DO’s and CLO’s expanding clinical and professional roles, particularly as healthcare demands evolve and multidisciplinary working becomes more important. Members can discuss current initiatives, policy developments and how ABDO collaborates with regulators, educators and partner organisations to influence the future of the profession. Whether you are a student, newly qualified, or an experienced practitioner, the ABDO stand offers a chance to ask questions, share feedback, and ensure your professional body continues to reflect your needs. By visiting, you help strengthen a community that is passionately committed to its members, maintains high standards, and works collaboratively to secure a strong, sustainable future for DOs and CLOs."

Known for his approachable and member‑focused style, Ed works closely with colleagues across ABDO to stay up to date with policy, regulatory and professional developments that affect dispensing opticians. A familiar face at ABDO events and optical shows, Ed is passionate about supporting members and strengthening the profession at every stage of their career and is a dispensing optician himself."
