Sustainability has become a defining dimension of modern eyewear. In this interactive workshop, clinicians are invited to embark on a guided expedition into sustainable eyewear, where knowledge is uncovered step by step and complexity is transformed into clarity.Together, we will explore the different types of eyewear materials designed to reduce environmental impact. The session will examine how these materials are developed and processed, and how they aim to address specific environmental challenges. Along the journey, we will decode the role of certifications and standards, understanding which issues they are designed to tackle, what they truly guarantee, and where their limits lie.As part of the expedition, participants will unlock the fundamentals of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied to frame materials. Through clear, practical examples, we will trace a frame’s journey from raw material extraction to production, distribution, use, and end of life. This will help clinicians interpret environmental data, understand trade-offs between different material choices, and recognise why sustainability is often a balance rather than a single perfect solution. The final stage of the journey focuses on communication. Sustainability only creates real value when it can be explained clearly, accurately, and responsibly. This workshop will equip participants with practical tools, concepts, and language to translate technical sustainability information — including material properties and certifications — into clear, patient-friendly conversations. The goal is to support transparency, build credibility, and avoid oversimplification or greenwashing.
