"This peer review is provided as part of a short course for qualified DOs on refractive management, to support them to be at the same standards expected in the ABDO 2023 syllabus in ophthalmic dispensing. The previous provided skills workshop have taken delegates through a series of tasks which the DO can perform when managing a patient who requires dispensing but has either not just competed an eye examination. Circumstances include a patient who has returned to the practice for dispensing sometime after their eye examination but before their recall period is finished and those who have been examined elsewhere. The tasks are part of those required to enable the DO to be confident as to whether the patient is suitable to be dispensed with the current prescription or should be referred to an optometrist before dispensing. The DO is familiar with all the procedures on a theoretical basis upon qualification and the purpose of this session is to bring their theoretical knowledge into confident application. This peer review presents 3 patient cases:1. A presbyopic patient who attends the practice where they were examined 6 months ago looking to purchase a task-specific pair of spectacles2. A patient who attends the practice for a walk-in dispense having been tested at another practice 3 months ago3. A patient is finding driving more difficult in twilight and low light and is enquiring to see if there are any dispensing solutions which may helpFor each case the delegates will be asked to discuss what checks and examinations they would consider appropriate for the DO to conduct, to be confident to go ahead and dispense spectacles. This includes checks to be confident the patient hasn’t experienced any changes in their vision since their sight test and that the prescription is suitable for use following a visual task analysis. For the third case they will also be required to discuss the UK standards for driving, pathology conditions which may impact driving and associated signs and symptoms as well as dispensing solutions which may support vision for driving."
